Nusa Penida to Become A New Icon of Tourist Destination

nusa penida1Metrotvnews.com, Denpasar. The determination of Nusa Penida as one the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in Indonesia is expected to enable this island to be a new icon of tourist destination in Bali which focuses on its underwater beauty in addition to its traditional community hospitality.

The determination of Nusa Penida MPA, Klungkung District, Bali Province, is conducted concurrently with Nusa Penida Festival 2014 on Monday (9/5) by Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sharif Cicip Sutardjo.

Bali Deputy Governor I Ketut Sudikerta said, this determination will change the status of Nusa Penida, formerly it was known as an isolated island, now it can become a new tourism icon for Bali and Indonesia.

"This determination actually has been a Klungkung District Government's discourse since 2010. Finally it is determined now," he added.

The determination of Nusa Penida MPA coincides with Nusa Penida Festival 2014 and Coral Triangle Day III as agreed by six Coral Triangle countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor Leste.

The celebration is the second time to be held in Bali. Previously it was held in Badung District in 2012.

"This determination marks a historic day for Bali province and Klungkung district as it signifies our contribution to the creation of MPA as a first step in protecting coastal and small islands ecosystem, so it can give value added in terms of ecology, economy and social," further he added.

Nusa Penida is rich in biodiversity where it is home to 149.05 hectares of coral reefs with 296 reef species and is included in the global coral triangle which is currently the world's priority for preservation.

According to him, this determination is a response of the central government to the commitment of Klungkung district government in effort to save marine resources in Klungkung district, especially in the waters of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. This effort also supports the national program of Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to achieve 20 million hectaes of MPA by 2020. (Arnoldus Dhae).
